1972 Lotus Elan Sprint DHC
Price: £64,995
An exceptional example of the iconic Lotus Elan Sprint presented in its original specification and showing just 22,500 miles from new. This car boasts a wonderfully detailed and traceable ownership record, making it one of the most authentic survivors of its type.
The car was delivered new by Lotus Cars on 21 January 1972 to Mr. Anthony Marcantonio of Newcastle, as confirmed by the original factory invoice and buff registration log book on file. Used as a cherished second car, the Elan remained in his care until 1978, when he replaced it with a Ferrari 308.
Its second custodian, Mr. Victor Maller of Wheathampstead, Hertfordshire, acquired the Sprint on 9 March 1978 after an extended search for a low-mileage, unmolested example. He kept the car until 1981 when it was sold to his local garage proprietor, Ian Chambers, who had intended to restore it. However, the restoration never took place, and the Elan was subsequently stored for the next quarter-century.
In October 2006, after 25 years in dry storage, the car was discovered with just under 21,000 miles recorded. It was then purchased by a passionate Elan enthusiast who embarked on a meticulous, three-year nut-and-bolt restoration, completed in 2009. The process involved some of the finest marque specialists, supported by extensive documentation, invoices, and a full photographic record. Every component was refurbished, renewed, or refinished to an exceptionally high standard.
Upon completion, the car joined the distinguished private collection of celebrated British driver Steve Soper, where it has been preserved in outstanding condition ever since. The car has been know to us since 2022 where it was bought and sold to a few of the most revered classic car collectors before being offered for sale now. Under recent ownership the car has recently been serviced by highly regarded classic and race specialist, Peter Chambers, whereby all and any item that needed addressing was done, to a cost of almost £4,000.
The Elan still presents beautifully, with flawless bodywork, perfect panel fit, and an interior that remains true to factory presentation, proof of the restoration’s enduring quality.
On the road, this Sprint delivers the magic that made the Elan such a legend, a razor sharp chassis, lightness of touch, and an infectious sense of fun. Few cars, classic or modern, match its delicacy, precision, and sheer driving joy. I do urge anyone who has had the thought of Elan ownership at some point in their life to come and see this car, there is no better example and if you are to own an Elan it really should be this one. This example represents the ideal blend of heritage, usability, and value, a true Lotus that lives up to its reputation every time the road opens ahead.
