1992 Lancia Hyena

There aren't many cars that combine two great Italian names quite as directly as the Lancia Hyena does. Underneath that fastback Zagato body sits the mechanical heart of the all-conquering Delta HF Integrale Evo 1. Zagato wanted to give the rally winning Delta a shape that matched its reputation and the plan was ambitious. Five hundred cars built by the storied Milan design house. Reality was more modest. Only 24 were ever finished which is part of why this car is such a rare thing to come across today. Its styling also nods back to another great Lancia Zagato, the Fulvia Integrale, a car that helped set the template for this kind of purposeful coach built coupe.

Zagato has always obsessed over weight and the Hyena shows it. The body is hand formed aluminium, the cabin is trimmed in carbon fibre and the finished car weighs around 1,150kg dry, roughly 200kg less than a standard Integrale Evo 1. This particular car, chassis 002, was first bought by an English banker who wanted something quick but civilised enough to use between homes in England and Italy. Before he took delivery the car was reworked to push output up to around 300bhp with a gas flowed cylinder head and a tubular exhaust manifold. Cross drilled brakes, a 90 litre long range fuel tank and an upgraded stereo were added too, all sensible touches for a car meant to cover real distance. It's also the only one of the 24 Hyenas built that kept the Integrale's original rear seats.

The car changed hands in 2004 and its next owner sent it to Mavcorse Preparazione Sportive in Milan who repainted the Zagato bodywork in its original dual layer black and added sound deadening through the interior. A French collector took over in 2012 and pushed things further still, fitting a Garrett GT28 turbo, Koni Yellow dampers, adjustable engine mapping and a twin piston pop off valve. The car then moved to the UK in 2018 with just 26,200km on the clock.

Around six years ago the car was invited back to the Zagato factory in Milan where it featured alongside Mr Andrea Zagato himself in a short YouTube documentary tracing the history of the Hyena. It's a nice reminder that this particular example has stayed close to the people who created it.

Its current owner bought the car in 2024 and has kept up that same tradition of proper care and proper use. He's had the car thoroughly serviced by marque specialists The Light Car Company on two occasions, once in 2024 and again in 2025, spending around £17,000 in total. Rather than letting it sit he's taken it on two European touring trips which feels like exactly what this car was built for in the first place.

It's a car that's comfortable enough for a long drive but wakes up the moment you ask something of the throttle. Complete with its original Certificate of Origin, factory handbooks, period photos taken at Zagato's Milan works and a thick file of invoices tracking its development over three decades, this Hyena is one of the best documented examples of the 24 built and one of the more usable classics to come out of 1990s Italy.
